You can choose to provide general or specific about the location of your find as you like. However, providing accurate location information will greatly assist experts in tracking infestations and locating the site if they need to do an on-site inspection or followup.

Using the Google Map

Select a county from the drop down menu. A map will appear with a marker indicating the center point of the county. You can leave the marker there to indicate a general location or drag the maker to a specific location. Use the + and - buttons in the left corner to zoom the map for more detail.

Description

Providing a description of the area where you found the specimen is also helpful. For example name the road, trail or specific landmarks near the site whether the species was found. Describe the geographic location, such as in a ditch, on a hillside or in a streambed. If you happen to have taken GPS coordinates, enter them here.

Species Type and Name

It is helpful if you can try to identify the species before you report it. If you have a guide or watch list reference, review the species identification information and compare it to your find. If you are unsure of the identification, leave the Name field blank and an invasive species expert will help you with the identification. If you know the name but don't see it in the drop down list, enter it in the description field.

Descriptions of Species Types

• Aquatic plants - Plants that live partly or wholly in water. Examples include hydrilla and Eurasian watermilfoil.
• Aquatic invertebrates - Animals without backbones that live in the water. Examples include the zebra and quagga mussels and the Asian clam.
• Aquatic vertebrates - Animals with backbones that live in the water. Examples include the red-bellied pacu and the Oriental weatherfish.
• Birds - Warm-blooded animals with backbones, a body more or less completely covered with feathers and the forelimbs modified as wings. Examples include the European starling and the mute swan.
• Mammals - Warm-blooded animals with backbones, a covering of hair on the skin and, in the female, milk-producing mammary glands for nourishing the young. Examples include nutria and feral pigs.
• Microorganisms - An organism, such as bacteria, of microscopic or ultramicroscopic size. Examples include the fungus that causes Sudden Oak Death in trees and the parasite that causes whirling disease in fish.
• Land plants - Plants that live on land. Examples include Himalayan blackberry, English ivy and purple loosestrife.
• Land invertebrates - Animals without backbones that live on land. Examples include the Asian lady beetle and gypsy moth.

Description

If you don't have a photo, a detailed description is the next best option for identification. Include the most distinctive characteristics of the specimen such as size, color, shape of leaves, description of the flower, etc. Estimate the number of individuals in the area and how widespread the infestation.

Photos

Photos are the most reliable method for experts to positively identify a species. Use the three shot method: a wide shot of the species and surrounding habitat; a closeup of the species; a detail shot such as leaves or flowers. Enter a descriptive title for each photo you upload, such as "full plant" or "closeup of leaf."
